Rockets Review: Regular Seasons Wind Down, Postseason Underway

A quick look at Needham High School sports action over the past week, featuring indoor track, girls gymnastics and basketball

Regular Seasons Wind Down, Postseason Tournaments Underway!

On Tuesday, Wrestling beat Brookline on the road, before heading to North Andover on Saturday for a dual meet tournament.  Coming out of the day 1-1, the team's final match will be held this Wednesday, as they host Wellesley on Senior Night at 7:00pm, before traveling to Quincy on Saturday, 2/9 for the DII Metro Sectional Tournament.

Basketball for Boys and Girls

Girls Basketball got two big wins on the week, beating Norwood on Tuesday and Framingham on Friday on Senior Night. With the two wins, the Team moves to 9-7 on the season, needing one more victory (in final 4 games) to qualify for the postseason. The girls will travel to Weymouth on Tuesday, before playing their last three games next week. Please note the Varsity, JV, and Freshman games scheduled to be played on Thursday, February 7th, have been postponed to Monday, February 11th (Varsity @ 7:15pm).

Boys Basketball earned their 6th win on the year on Friday over Framingham, to move to 6-8, and will need 4 wins in final 6 games to make the playoffs.  The road to the tourney will start on Tuesday at home against Weymouth and at home on Friday against Braintree.

Gymnastics Bounce Back

Although Gymnastics lost their first meet of the year Tuesday vs State-Power Wellesley on Senior Night, they bounced back to take down Natick on the road on Thursday to move to 7-1. The girls will travel to take on Walpole on Tuesday before heading to Newton North on Saturday for the BSC Championships.
Boys Swimming & Diving, having wrapped up the regular season, headed to Brookline on Wednesday and Thursday to compete in the BSC Championships.  Over the 2-day event, the Rockets got some great performances, and used a strong finish in the 4x100 Freestyle Relay, the final event of the meet, to move into 3rd place, only points behind 2nd place Brookline. Senior Ilie Tomac arguably had the strongest overall performance for Needham, as he won the 200 Individual Medley Relay and also won the 100 Breaststroke in a school record time of 1:02.65.  Next up for the boys, the Sectional Tournament at MIT on Saturday at 4:15pm.

Reggie Lewis Center Running

On Thursday at the Reggie Lewis Center, the Boys & Girls Indoor Track Teams took on inter-divisinal BSC competition, as the Boys ran away from Norwood for the win and the Girls out-distanced Walpole for the victory.  Before heading into the BSC Championships on Wednesday, Needham's Girls' 4x400 Relay Team, consisting of Kira Oberle, Hallie Armstrong, Olivia Corkery, Robin Kelly, running through the Needham Track Club, took part in the prestigious New Balance Grand Prix at the Reggie Lewis Center.  While the squad finished in 8th place, it was truly a great experience for the athletes to compete in a nationally televised world class meet (highlights were actually aired from 2-4pm on Saturday on ESPN2!).
