Rockets Review: Post-season Qualifiers, Battle of the Border and More!

A summary of Needham High School sports events in the last week.

The following was submitted by Needham High School Athletics Department:

#16 Field Hockey & #4 Boys Soccer Qualify for Postseason!

The 16th Ranked Needham Field Hockey Team became the first Rockets squad this fall to qualify for the State Tournament as they got their 8th and 9th wins of the season over Newton and Milton last week.  Standing at 9-1-2, Needham will look to make a statement against 20th ranked Norwood on Monday, before welcoming in Dedham for a 7:00pm night game at DeFazio on Wednesday.

#4 Boys Soccer also qualified for the State Tournament with their win over Lexington on Saturday, and at 8-0-3 have yet to lose this season. After a lackluster performance that saw the Rockets tie Newton North, the team bounced back with a victory over Milton before taking down Lexington on the road over the weekend.

The Rockets will only see non-league opponents this week, traveling to Xaverian on Monday and hosting Newton South on Sunday.

Girls Soccer played the 2nd ranked Tigers of Newton North to a draw on Tuesday night in front of a large crowd at Memorial Field and then got wins over Milton and Marshfield to finish the week strong.  The Girls will have only one game this week, as they travel to #15 Dedham on Thursday.

Cross Country Teams Run thru Competition at NH Invite!

On Saturday, the Boys & Girls Cross Country Teams travel north for the Battle of the Border Invitational in New Hampshire.  After a great day of racing, the Rockets brought home championships in the Girls Varsity, Girls JV and Boys Freshman races!  Boys Varsity also ran well, finishing in 3rd, while Sophomores Margie Cullen and Sarah Armstrong finished an impressive 1-2 in the G Varsity race, and Sophomore Maddi Terry won the G JV race!

Golf Team in Good Spot

Although the Golf Team lost their first league match of the season to Walpole, the team stands in good position with two BSC matches to play.  Needham will travel to Newton North on Tuesday before three team members will take part in the BSC All-Star Championships at the Dedham Country Club on Thursday.  The Rockets will be looking to retain the BSC Cup after winning the Championship last year.

#18 Football to 3-1!

On Friday night, Rockets Football traveled to Framingham and came away with a hard fought 34-12 win! Now at 3-1 (2-0 BSC Carey), Needham has moved up to 5th in Division II South (in the new State playoff system, the top 2 teams from the Carey will qualify for the playoffs, and the top 4 teams in DII South will earn home playoff games the week on Nov. 1st).  Standing at 18th on the Globe Top-20 list, Needham will travel to Braintree on Friday for a 5:00pm game.
