Needham HS Athletics Wins District & Team Sportsmanship Awards, Named PCA National Featured Partner

During a fall season that has seen many of the NHS sports excel in league, regional and state competitions, the overall athletics program and the Girls Cross Country Team have been recognized for good sportsmanship.  The NHS Athletic Department has also been named the National Featured Partner by the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA).

The District Sportsmanship awards are chosen by the athletic directors from the member schools in each district and are presented every year to one school in each of the eight athletic districts within the MIAA structure.  This is the first time Needham has won this prestigious award.

Principal Dr. Pizzi, Athletic Director Mr. Hauben, NHS Math Teacher and Boys Tennis Coach Mr. Lawrence (whose team won the Team Tennis Sportsmanship Award last spring), along with 11 NHS student-athletes will be recognized, and presented with the award, at the MIAA's annual Sportsmanship Summit on Friday, November 16th at Gillette Stadium. Please visit www.miaa.net/contentm/easy_pages/view.php?sid=38&page_id=145 to learn more about the award and see the list of past winners from each District.

Here is an excerpt from the award letter received by Needham HS from the MIAA:

"It is with great pleasure (we) write this letter of congratulations to Needham High School for being selected by your district to receive the 2012 MIAA District C Sportsmanship Award.  Your school has a great deal to be proud of as this significant recognition is selected by the schools with whom you compete.

Following on the heels of the Team Sportsmanship Awards the NHS Football and Boys Tennis teams won during the 2011-12 school year, Needham's Girls Cross Country Team has been recognized this fall as the winners of the 11th Annual Ted Dutkiewicz Team Cross Country Sportsmanship Award. Co-sponsored by the MIAA and the MSTCA, this award is presented to the high school cross country program in each division (boys & girls) that exemplifies the sportsmanship qualities of the late Ted Dutkiewicz, former cross country and track coach at Springfield Central High School. One of his great desires was seeing that high school cross country was conducted in a fair and equitable manner with sportsmanship the goal that all athletes and coaches should keep foremost in their minds."

Similar to the levels at which the Football and Boys Tennis teams competed at last year, the Girls Cross Country Team has had its best season in program history, going undefeated (11-0) in the regular season and finishing second in the Division II Sectional Meet this past weekend, where they were presented with the Sportsmanship Award.  Coaches Cara O'Connell (NHS Spanish Teacher), Chris Van Cott, and Drew Ames (NHS History Teacher), The Girls now move on to the All-State Meet next Saturday, November 17th at the Northfield Recreation Center.

Needham High School has also been named the National Featured Partner by the PCA. Working with the organization for the past four years, NHS Athletics has offered PCA workshops and programming to hundreds of student-athletes, parents and coaches, while working to build the culture of youth athletics in Needham. NHS Football Coach Dave Duffy was also named one of the PCA's Double-Goal Coach-of-the-Years back in June and two current seniors student-athletes are finalists for the PCA/Deloitte Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program, with the winners to be announced at Fenway Park's EMC Club in December!
