Reporters Notebook: Boys Soccer Concludes Season, Football One Win Away From Playoffs

It’s been a rather quiet week on the sports front in Needham, as a majority of the fall squads have concluded their season, while a few winter teams have begun preparations for their upcoming slates.

Here’s some of the latest news pertaining toward the boys varsity soccer and football teams.

Boys Soccer Looks to the Future  

It’s been a few days since the boys varsity soccer season came to an end at Medway High School, but after their against Greater New Bedford concluded, both head coach Don Brock and senior goalkeeper Jake Bronstein reflected on the loss, as well as looked ahead to next season. 

“It [was] tough to end the season [losing in overtime] because we knew we had more in it, more games to be won, but hey, it has to come to an end sometimes, and it did [on Friday],” Bronstein said.

“Again, another year, we’ll have a little more depth. We can throw in more kids, and so forth,” Brock said. “What we had basically was a lot of [junior varsity players down the stretch].”        

The Rockets will return a majority of their starting squad next season and should be favored to win the Bay State Conference Carey. Needham’s junior varsity squad experienced a great deal of success this season, and it’s expected a majority those players will join the likes of Nolan Brady, Will Corkery, Harry Swartz and .

Football Needs Win Against Wellesley to Clinch the Playoffs

After last Friday, the Rockets have climbed back into playoff contention and can secure a postseason berth with a win on Thanksgiving against Wellesley. However, if the Raiders defeat the Rockets, they’ll need some help from Walpole, who’d have to beat Weymouth.

If the Rockets should advance to the postseason, they’d most likely face a member of the Big Three Conference.
