With fall sports back in full swing, Director of Athletics Micah Hauben has sent out a reminder to parents and athletes about important dates and deadlines coming up this season:
Needham Athletic Information Night 1
The first mandatory Athletic Information Night will be held on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. All ninth and 11th grade athletes and parents, along with first-time and new-to-NHS athletes, are required to attend one of the two nights scheduled. Those who will be unable to attend on Aug. 30 should plan to be at Info Night II on Wednesday, Nov. 14.
The Athletic Information Nights present Needham's student-athletes and parents with a chance to learn more about the school and state interscholastic athletic regulations and policies, and to hear from the athletic director, assistant principal and Athletic Training Room staff.
Presenters will also touch on student-athlete eligibility issues, including academic and chemical health violations and sanctions, and concussion management and treatment procedures. Safety, responsibility and decision-making will be discussed, along with a review of the district and state policies around anti-bullying and anti-hazing, with the ultimate goal of working to hep keep all of our student-athletes healthy and safe.
Fall Athletic User Fee Deadline
The deadline to submit the fall 2012 athletic user fee is Wednesday, Sept. 5. Students and their parents should either mail in the fee to Needham High School, 609 Webster St., Needham, MA (Attention: Athletic Department) or drop it off at the athletic office.
The standard user fee per athlete per season is $285. In the fall there is a $50 surcharge due for girls swimming and diving participants. Reduction of Fee Request Forms can be picked up in the Athletic Office. Please make all checks payable to "NHS Athletics."
State-Mandated Online Concussion Education Course
If you and your son or daughter have not already completed the state-mandated concussion education component (required by law), please go to www.cdc.gov/concussion/HeadsUp/online_training.html to sign up for and complete the free course.
New Website for NHS Athletic Schedules
HighSchoolSports.net has shifted to USATodayHSS.com; however, the site is not currently working. Due to major glitches in their system, school officials are recommending all athletes and families use the following link to access NHS team schedules and event information: http://schedules.schedulestar.com/Needham-High-School-Needham-Heights-MA.
Positive Coaching Alliance Workshops Set in October
The schedule for the first set of Positive Coaching Alliance workshops has been set for Oct. 1 and 2. All Needham Public Schools coaches will have a session on Monday night, Oct. 1, while the 2012-13 varsity captains will have their annual leadership workshop during the early release day on Oct. 2 (more details will be sent separately to team captains).
On the evening of Oct. 2, the school district will offer a Sport Parent Workshop for all NHS and youth sport parents in Needham. New for this year, all parents attending the Oct. 2 workshop, or the PCA parent sessions at the 1/12/13 NHS Parent Conference, will receive four free admissions to any 2012-13 NHS athletic events (up to a $20 value—excludes Thanksgiving Football Game, December Boy/Girls double-header ice hockey games against Wellesley and all MIAA tournament events).
