Small Business Spotlight: Boston Consignment

Boston Consignment in Needham is not a used furniture store. It is an an upscale home furnishings store that acts as a window into the past.

Husband and wife team Sheila and Real Roy have been in business for 12 years, first opening a consignment store in Fairfield, Conn. Though business was doing well, they wanted to make their way to the Boston area. After four years, they closed their Fairfield location and made the move, opening Boston Consignment in Needham.

“We’re really on the cusp of the golden west in terms of people who have accepted the shop and buying high quality items,” Real said.

“We’re having a great season,” Sheila said. “It’s a wonderful environment to do business in. There are plenty of good things out there so that our cup runneth over with wonderful items.”

Often times, people contact the Roys because they are downsizing. However, shoppers are anyone from interior designers to people looking for that one special item that just belongs in their home.

The Roys have been married for almost 50 years. While Real handles the accounting and computer aspects of the shop, Sheila makes the decisions about which items to consign.

“I think the fact that we communicate so well together, because we have been together for so long makes it much easier,” Sheila said. “It’s a partnership that started in the 60s. We’re vintage partners.”

People interested in consigning items may send photos to the shop at 238 Highland Ave.
