Rockets Review: Teams Go 16-0-1 in Varsity Action

Needham High School athletes had a stellar week, Oct. 8-12, and the golf team won the Bay State Conference title.

In an impressive feat not often accomplished, the nine Needham High School varsity teams in action from Oct. 8-12 combined for 16 wins, 0 losses and 1 tie, plus a Bay State Conference title.

Monday, Oct. 8

  • No. 6 boys soccer ties Newton South.

Tuesday, Oct. 9

  • Golf defeats Newton North.

Wednesday, Oct. 10

  • Golf defeats Wellesley.
  • Field hockey defeats Framingham.
  • No. 6 boys soccer defeats Framingham.
  • No. 7 girls soccer defeats Framingham.
  • Boys cross country defeats Natick and Norwood.
  • Girls cross country defeats Natick and Norwood.
  • Girls volleyball defeats Milton.

Thursday, Oct. 11

Needham golfers Andrew Noble, Jake Shuman and Taylor Kay-Green take the Bay State Conference title by 10 strokes at Framingham Country Club. This is the second straight year the NHS golf team has brought home the BSC Cup.

Friday, Oct. 12

  • Field hockey defeats Norwood.
  • No. 6 boys soccer defeats Norwood.
  • No. 7 girls soccer defeats Norwood.
  • Girls volleyball defeats Framingham.
  • No. 11 football defeats Milton.
  • Girls swimming and diving defeats Natick.

Cross Country

The cross country teams also competed in the McIntyre Twilight Invitational in Barnstable on Saturday, Oct. 12, with the undefeated girls team taking first place and the boys team finishing third, just 3 points out of second. For more details about the teams, visit the NHS cross county/track blog at www.needhamrunning.blogspot.com.

Boys Soccer

This week, golf will wrap up their regular season on Monday, Oct. 15 at home against Dedham, while the sixth-ranked boys soccer team will take on No. 2 Weymouth on Tuesday night, Oct. 16 on Memorial Field at 7:15 p.m. At halftime, the 2011 and 2012 NHS boys tennis Division I State Championship teams will be recognized for their accomplishments as the 2012 Championship banner is presented to Coach Drew Lawrence and his players.

On Thursday, Oct. 18, boys soccer will hold their Senior Day ceremonies as they host Braintree at DeFazio at 3:45 p.m. On Saturday night, Oct. 20, No. 7 girls soccer will welcome in 11th-ranked Winchester to DeFazio for 6 p.m. varsity and JV games.
