Patch Answers: What To Do With Leaves in Needham?

Send us your questions, and we'll do our best to find the answer.

As October winds to a close, the beautiful changing leaves around Needham will continue to fall, littering local streets, yards and walkways with the natural debris of the season.

So what's a homeowner to do with it all?

Needham residents can bring bags of leaves to the Recycling and Transfer Station on Sundays throughout November between noon and 4 p.m. On those dates—Nov. 4, 11, 18 and 25—the RTS will accept only leaves, not recycling, trash or other yard waste such as grass or brush, according to the town website, needhamma.gov.

"When disposing of leaves, residents should empty the leaves out of bags/containers into the designated leaf area, then place leaf bags/containers in the proper disposal container located in the yard waste area," town regulations state.

Commercial contractors will not be allowed to dispose of leaves on these Sundays.

Needham homeowners in need of some help raking up all those falling leaves are encouraged to take advantage of a program being offered by the Needham High School Habitat for Humanity group. Students will be going out to local homes to clean up yards on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Nov. 3 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. They are requesting a donation in exchange for their efforts. Residents should supply their own bags and rakes (if possible) and are responsible for disposal of all yard waste. To request a visit, email william_goldman@needham.k12.ma.us.
