New Committee To Look at Mansionization of Needham House Lots

According to Planning Board data, demolition of older, smaller, and less expensive houses is the norm now as new, larger single-family homes are built.

Over the last five years, 317 building permits were issued in the town, resulting in 289 new homes that accounted for 92 percent of new home construction. The remaining was infill construction on empty or underused lots (six percent) and subdivision construction (three percent).

“Needham has transitioned to a place where the majority of its new single family home construction is derived from tear downs driven by market demand and the unavailability of infill and subdivision lots,” said a statement released by the Planning Board.

“Develop a vision for the residential areas of the town and to consider whether zoning or other land use controls are desired, warranted and potentially advantageous in Needham.”

Letters of interest and a resume should be sent to the Needham Planning Board, 500 Dedham Avenue, Needham, MA by March 7.
