Needham Resident To Represent Fourth District at 2012 Democratic National Convention
Carmen Fields was elected delegate at the Fourth District Democratic Caucus held in Newton on April 21.
Needham resident Carmen Fields joins residents from Newton, Brookline, Mansfield, Sharon and Medway in representing Massachusetts' Fourth District in the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
Fields was elected as a delegate at the held Saturday, April 21 in Newton. Similar events were held in districts across the state. Delegates will represent their districts in the 2012 Democratic National Convention, to be held in Charlotte, NC in September.
At the convention, delegates "will cast their votes to officially nominate President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden for a second term and approve the Democratic Party platform," according to a news release from the Massachusetts Democratic Party.

About 200 Democrats attended the Fourth District caucus, according to the release. The event was hosted by Newton Mayor Setti Warren, and speakers at the event included Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray, Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin, Treasurer Steve Grossman and congressional candidate Joe Kennedy III.
“The enthusiasm in the air at this event was palpable,” Warren said, according to the Mass. Dems news release. “We not only elected a set of committed delegates to represent Massachusetts in Charlotte this September, but we also began a process of getting our supporters excited and energized for the fall campaign and the hard work that must be undertaken to prepare for it in the months ahead.”
According to the Mass. Dems. news release, Massachusetts delegates to the Democratic Nation Convention are selected in three ways. First, registered Democrats in each congressional district elect four men, four women and one alternate delegate at their distric caucuses.

Next, on May 5, the Democratic State Committee will elect delegates to represent party leaders and elected officials. Also, some Democrats are automatic delegates because they hold leadership positions in party organizations or high elected office, according to the news release.
