Scams in Needham Police Log: Nov. 8 - 11

The following information was supplied by Needham Police Department. Where arrests are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Friday, Nov. 8

10:30 a.m.: Walk in reported someone throwing a rock through the storm door in the front of his mother-in-law’s house. The home is on Hillcrest Road and is vacant at this time.

12:13 p.m.: Police were dispatched to a Hillside Avenue address for the report of a disturbance. After a short investigation, it was determined to be a civil issue and both parties were advised to seek a remedy through the civil court process.

8:18 p.m.: Police took a report from a Washington Avenue resident who was involved in a scam. He was told his brother was in a car crash and was being held at gunpoint until he sends $1,800 via Western Union to Puerto Rico. The reporting party found out after sending the money that his brother was fine and not involved. This matter is being investigated.

Saturday, Nov. 9

12:03 p.m.: A Chestnut Street resident reported that she was receiving harassing text and phone calls from a friend’s ex-girlfriend. The officer spoke with all parties involved and they all agreed to cease and desist.

2 p.m.: Police received a report of past fraud from a walk in party. According to the party, a debt collection agency contacted her and stated that she owed $700. This debt was not legitimate and appeared to be a scam. The victim was advised to contact credit bureaus and a report was filed.

9:55 p.m.: Police initiated a motor vehicle stop at Forest Street and Central Avenue after observing a vehicle travelling approximately 56 mph per the mounted radar in the cruiser. The operator revealed that he had a learner’s permit, but not a valid driver’s license. The operator did not have a licensed driver in the vehicle. The operator, a 21-year-old male from Boston will be summonsed to Dedham District Court for speeding and for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.


Monday, Nov. 11

12:10 p.m.: Police responded to the Needham Library for a reported one car crash into a telephone poll. The operator, who was transported by Needham Fire Department to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, was cited for failing to use care when stopping.
