Needham Man Goes Missing on Birthday off Chatham

A Needham man went missing on his birthday, from a boat in Chatham.

The man, 52-year-old John Fitzgerald, was alone at the aft of the boat on Friday night, according to reports from Boston.com, and he is believed to have gone overboard.

However, the Cape Cod Times reports that the search was called off on Saturday night--24 hours after the fact.

"We go above and beyond those recommendations by our search and rescue coordinators to give everyone the best possible chance of search crews finding them," Coast Guard Petty Officer Ross Ruddell told the Times. "The Coast Guard would like to give its condolences to the family."

Authorities are not certain whether Fitzgerald was wearing a life jacket at the time of the fall.
