Falling Branches Cause Problems in Needham

Police, fire and DPW crews responded to multiple calls today about falling limbs and downed wires.

The continues to cause problems around Needham, with more branches and wires coming down even while town crews work to clean up the existing mess and NSTAR employees attempt to restore power to hundreds.

Needham police and fire officials received several calls Tuesday morning, including a possible electrical fire at a home on Tower Road and the report of a huge tree that fell across the same road onto wires around 10:00 a.m.

Also around 10:00 a.m., police responded to the report of a limb falling on live wires on Pine Street.

Throughout town, roadways are blocked or closed, and officials are advising residents to stay away from all downed limbs and wires in case the power is still live in those areas.

A noon update posted on the NSTAR Web site stated that 993 customers in Needham were still without electricity, with a total of 26,000 NSTAR customers around the region still in the dark.

NSTAR officials are anticipating all power will be restored in Needham by Wednesday evening, according to the site.

"Due to downed trees and the severe damage experienced on our system, we're anticipating our clean-up and power restoration work will be a multi-day effort," a report published on the company Web site stated.
