Update: Power Outage in Chestnut Street Area

Traffic signals on Chestnut Street were not working Friday morning

Updated at 1:33 p.m.

Several buildings and at least two traffic lights in the area of Chestnut Street near Great Plain Avenue were without power this morning while NSTAR workers dealt with a faulty underground cable.

The heavy underground lines had been "sparking and smoking," Chief Paul Buckley said.

NSTAR spokesman Mike Durand said the outage lasted about 45 minutes and affected 69 NSTAR customers.

“There was a section of underground cable on Chestnut Street that failed, so we had to make repairs to that,” Durand said.

The power has since been restored and the work completed, Durand said.

The power outage reportedly affected traffic signals at Chestnut and School streets and Chestnut Street and Great Plain Avenue, although the nearby police and fire stations remained with electricity, operating on a generator, Buckley said.
