Obituary: Veronica M. Barrett, Volunteer Driver for Needham Community Council

Veronica M. Barrett, 94, formerly of Needham, died Jan. 11, 2014 at the Masconomet Healthcare Center in Topsfield.

Vera was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Raymond and Anna Malley Jan. 7, 1920. Vera was married to her husband, John J. Barrett, for 30 years. He preceded her in death in 1977.

After World War II, John and Vera moved from New York to Massachusetts, where they raised a family of five children. As a long time resident of Needham, she was a devoted parishioner of the Saint Joseph Parish and a volunteer driver for many years for the Needham Community Council prior to relocating to Topsfield in 1996.

Vera is survived by her sister, Patricia Harty of Florida; her sister-in-law, Mary Malley, wife of Donald, of New York; her five children, John Barrett of Andover, Donna Klaum of Belchertown, Carol Powell of Worthington, Wayne Barrett of Topsfield and Kevin Barrett of Millbury; her thirteen grandchildren; her eight great-grandchildren; and her many nieces and nephews. Vera was preceded in death by her sibling brothers, Raymond and Donald.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial to celebrate the life of Veronica Barrett will be held Friday, Jan. 17, 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Lee. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Spring Street, Lee. Visiting hours will precede the service Friday, 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Kelly Funeral Home, 3 Main St., Lee.

Family has requested donations in her memory be made in lieu of flowers to the Needham Community Council, The Jimmy Fund, or Boston Catholic Charities.
