Obituary: Charles Sumner Butters II, Needham High School Graduate

Charles Sumner Butters II, 69, of Sebastian, Fla. passed away Nov. 21 at The Tippett Home in Needham.

He was born to the late Charles and Beatrice Butters, Feb. 23, 1944, in San Francisco, Calif. Chuck graduated from Needham High school in 1962 and received a Bachelor's degree in economics from Northeastern University. 

Although Chuck loved all sports, he had a strong passion for hockey and baseball, which he played in high school and college, and even later with hockey enthusiasts from Shawmut.

After college Chuck served in the army and achieved the rank of Captain during active duty in Panama. It was a true honor working in a country where his father was born and where his grandfather was an engineer of the Panama Canal. While there, Chuck was assigned to the Army Corp of Engineers.

His first employment after the service was at Shawmut Boston in systems and information technology. After a career of almost 20 years in banking he began a job at Computer Aided Decisions working for a very dear friend. 

In 2002, he retired to Florida but continued to spend his summers with family on Chebeague Island, Maine, where his wife's family has resided summers since the mid 1800's.

Chuck had a six-year battle with cancer. Golf was one of the few activities he was able to participate in throughout his sickness. It provided him with an opportunity to socialize with loved ones and engage in physical activity. 

He leaves behind his wife, Marilyn; his daughters, Wendysue and her husband Brian Ash of Westwood and Stacey Butters and her husband Sean Coffey of South Boston; and his grandchildren, Paige, Maggie and Dennis Ash.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Dec. 7, 2 p.m. at United Methodist Church, 800 Highland Avenue, Needham.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Chebeague United Methodist Church, 258 North Road, Chebeague Island, ME 04017 or to the Chebeague Golf Club Endowment Fund, 15 Sassafras Trail, Care of Fred Martindale, Savana Georgia, 31404.
