SPOTLIGHT ON HUMAN RIGHTS

What Are Your Human Rights?

Come to a free public forum hosted by the Needham Human Rights Committee and the Needham Free Public Library and see the award-winning video The Story of Human Rights, produced by Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI).  The video is based on the "United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights", the world's foremost human rights charter containing the 30 rights to which every human being is entitled.

"Many people know something about their rights.  Generally, they know they have the right to food and a safe place to stay.  They know they have a right to be paid for the work they do.  But there are many other rights.  When human rights are not well known by people, abuses such as discrimination, intolerance, injustice, oppression and slavery can arise."

"If young people don't know their own human rights, how will they ever respect someone else's?"  - YHRI

What Are Your Human Rights? is the first of a series of events designed to inform people of all ages and backgrounds - students, parents, teachers, and community members - about their basic human rights.  The event begins with a dynamic video that highlights lack of human rights awareness throughout much of the world today.  The film examines the perspectives of young adults, and provides a basis for exploring and understanding what human rights means in our day and age, in our country, in our community, and in our own lives.

The video will be followed with a presentation by Laura Rotolo - Staff Counsel/Community Advocate, and representative of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts.  Ms. Rotolo will guide the audience in examining the historical roots of human rights and provide examples of current challenges that Americans face in understanding and protecting the rights of its citizens.

What Are Your Human Rights? provides an opportunity for citizens of Needham to expand their knowledge of basic human rights, to become aware of human rights violations, and to become advocates for equity and social justice in their community, their state and their country.  "The humanity of all Americans is diminished when any group is denied rights granted to others."
- Julian Bond
