Plugged In Songwriting and Recording Workshop

PLUGGED IN SONGWRITING AND RECORDING WORKSHOP

The Plugged In Band Program is a local non-profit organization dedicated to showing young musicians how to make positive social change through music. Plugged In provides students with innovative music instruction, song-writing workshops, and access to dozens of community performances all with a focus on social responsibility.  Additionally, more than 300 students participate in the production of 3 annual benefit concerts at which Plugged In musicians perform to raise money for charitable organizations chosen by the students. Plugged In provides a nurturing, supportive community for young artists looking for a sense of belonging, a safe place to express themselves and an ego free, competition free environment in which they can use their creative talents to help others.   Plugged In provides access to a unique community that many young artists can’t find elsewhere. Plugged In promises no child, regardless of their ability to pay is ever turned away.

At the end of each Plugged In session there is a benefit concert that raises money for a charity chosen by the students.  On the first day of the workshop a representative from the charity for this session, Bikes Not Bombs, will talk with the students about the work of their organization. By acquiring a deeper understanding of the cause, the experience of performing in the concert often becomes more meaningful for the students.  Later in the day, students will break into groups, led by professional songwriters, and write songs based on their reactions to what they have learned and/or on any subject of their choice. On the second day, we will spend time in Plugged In's  recording studio, where a recording will be made of the students performing their original songs for a CD to be sold to raise money for the charity.
