Greene’s Field Playground Closed, Parents Warned

The structure has been deemed unsafe due to temporary fencing.

Needham Park and Recreation announced this morning that the Greene's Field Playground on Pickering Street is now closed.

Plans were made this spring to demolish the structure and this week temporary fencing was put into place making the playground inoperable and unsafe to children.

"(The playground) has outlived its expected lifespan by several years and the wood can no longer be repaired," said Patty Carey, director of Park and Rec.

Carey related that the Department of Public Works has blocked the area with snow fencing, but parents are taking it down and assisting their children over to access the playground.

"We are asking that parents respect the fencing and closed signs and bring their children to another playground," Carey said. "There are 18 other choices!"

All other sections of Greene's Field, including the baseball diamond, remain open.
