5 Things To Do This Weekend: Sept. 22-23

Enjoy Oktoberfest right here in Needham, shop a giant children's item tag sale or the Farmers Market, support Walker School or hear some great music.

It’s Thursday, and the weekend is right around the corner. Patch has your back with a few fun things to do. Check our picks for the activities to hit and some places to explore. Here's what's happening in and around your town.

1. Needham Oktoberfest

  • Where/when: The Village Club, 83 Morton St., Needham; Saturday, Sept. 22 from 3-11 p.m.
  • Why go: The Village Club is celebrating Oktoberfest—a 16-day festival held annually in Germany—right here in Needham with food and activities for all ages. From 3-6 p.m., families can drop by for children’s games and prizes, a bouncy house, a dunk tank and other fun. Then from 6-11 p.m., adults can enjoy a wood-sawing contest, raffles and music provided by The Oompah Band. Throughout the event, folks can enjoy German-inspired refreshments such as pretzels, sausages and beer.
  • Pricing: Small fee for kids’ activities; $5 per person for adults

2. Mass. Mothers of Twins Association Children’s Tag Sale

  • Where/when: The Congregational Church of Needham, 1154 Great Plain Ave., Needham; Saturday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Why go: Shop from more than 20,000 items at super low prices including gently used children’s clothing, strollers, baby equipment, cribs, toys, books, DVDs and more. Sponsored by the West Suburban Chapter of the Massachusetts Mothers of Twins Association. For more information, visit www.wscmmota.org.
  • Pricing: $1 admission; club members and children under 14 are free (cash only). Items for sale.

3. Great Hall Concert Series Presents Orion

  • Where/when: Town Hall, 1471 Highland Ave., Needham; Saturday, Sept. 22, 8 p.m.
  • Why go: The Needham Bank Great Hall Concert Series will resume its 2012 schedule this Saturday with the classical trio Orion. The Orion Piano Trio features Peter Zazofsky on violin, Ronald Lowry on cello and Randall Hodgkinson on piano, as well as guest artists Lila Brown on viola and Carolyn Davis Fryer on string bass. Orion will be joined by students and faculty from the Needham Public Schools for the opening from Tchaikovsky's wonderful String Serenade.

4. Third Annual Walk for Walker School and Fun Fair

  • Where/when: DeFazio Park, Dedham Avenue and South Street, Needham; Sunday, Sept. 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (registration 10:30-11 a.m.)
  • Why go: From walkerforwalker.org: “The Walk is a family-friendly event that unites the community to improve the lives of children, teens, and families facing unimaginable challenges. All proceeds from the Walk for Walker support our programs, including Beacon High School on Walker’s Watertown campus, Walker School [in Needham] and Walker Partnerships.” Choose from either a 1-mile loop or a 3-mile course through Needham center and enjoy refreshments, raffles, entertainment and family-friendly fun before and after the walk. 5. Needham Farmers Market

  • Where/when: First Parish in Needham, Unitarian Universalist, 23 Dedham Ave., Needham; Sunday, Sept. 23 from 1-5 p.m.
  • Why go: Shop from a variety of locally grown produce, herbs, meat, baked goods and more. Featured artisans will be Ali Campbell and Jennifer Yogel, and there will be music by the Low Tide. The Needham Newcomers Club will be at the nonprofit table. Get an early look at many of the "A Chair To Remember" Adirondack chairs that will be up for auction later this month.
