Beth Israel Hospital Kicks Off 100-Year Celebration

The staff party featured a cake in the shape of the original Glover Hospital.

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham launched a celebration of its 100 years at work with a 1912-themed birthday party last week.

At the event, hospital employees enjoyed hot pretzels, peanuts, cotton candy and penny candy—fare that would have accompanied a party in 1912—as well as a unique birthday cake in the shape of the original Glover Hospital, surrounded by 400 cupcakes.

BIDH-Needham, a community hospital affiliated with Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, officially marked the start of its 100th year of operation on Sept. 16, 2012.

The hospital is currently undergoing construction of a new state-of-the-art cancer care center, which is expected to open in the spring of 2014.

At the party last week, State Representative Denise Garlick delivered a citation from the governor and a joint resolution from Needham's state legislators—herself, Senator Richard Ross and Senator Michael Rush.

"Representative Garlick, a registered nurse, reminisced about her work at the then Glover Hospital and how much her mother-in-law, Nursing Supervisor Barbara Garlick, contributed to the hospital," according to a news release. "Following her remarks, President and CEO John Fogarty presented Representative Garlick with a framed photograph of her mother-in-law at work at The Glover Hospital."

As part of the year-long celebration of BID-Needham's 100th year, an extensive timeline marking key dates can be viewed in the hospital's main lobby or online at www.bidneedham.org.

The hospital's next big cetennial celebration will be the 14th annual fundraising gala on Oct. 26. The event will be held at the Newton Marriott Hotel and will feature hosts Billy Costa and Channel 5’s Susan Wornick. To purchase tickets, visit www.bidmc.org/needhamgala.
