Fighting ice dams? Why do they form and what can we do about it?

AAARRRGGHHH! ICE DAMS!!! Here's a great This Old House article about why ice dams form and how to get rid of them. My favorite is the panty hose solution. I see ice dams all over Needham MA as I drive around. If you are having problems with ice dams "Like" this post so people will know they are not alone.
