5 Things to Do This Weekend: May 12-13

Enjoy an a cappella concert, puppet show, Community Council open house, student-directed play or a book signing.

It’s Thursday, and the weekend is right around the corner. Patch has your back with a few fun things to do. Check our picks for the activities to hit and some places to explore. Here's what's happening in and around your town.

  • Why go: Don't miss this year's Vocal Support concert, featuring the NHS cappella groups Fermata Nowhere, Treble Rebels and Subway Dwarves as well as the professional group, Five O'Clock Shadow. Proceeds from this event will go toward purchasing a piano for the new senior center. A sold out performance is expected, and people are encouraged to get their tickets early. The performance is recommended for students ages 8 and up. Visit the Friends of Music website, nhsfriendsofmusic.org to purchase tickets in advance.

  • Where/when: , 1500 Highland Ave., Needham; Saturday, May 12, 10 a.m. to noon
  • Why go: The legacy of Needham's knitting industry can be seen throughout the town. Most town residents remember Carter's on Highland Avenue. The streets of Horace, Roscoe, William, John and Frank, near where Central Avenue meets Webster Street, were named for Carter's sons. Thorpe Park and Moseley Avenue also bear the names of knitting mill owners. Chaim Rosenberg, a Needham resident, has written an overview of the impact these knitters had on Needham in his new book "Knitters of Needham” and will be available at Black Sheep Knitting in Needham to sign books and answer questions about the topic.

  • Why go: Father Goose’s Tales, as presented by Nappy’s Puppets, is a modern retelling of nursery rhymes, stories and children’s songs that will entertain the whole family. Jim Napolitano, who has been featured on the award-winning PBS show, "Between the Lions," brings his unique presentation to Needham.

  • Why go: Come take a tour of the Community Council’s brand new building, browse the Thrift Shop and meet staff and board members.

  • Why go: NHS senior Lynne Richman is directing an all-student production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” as a senior project, with funding from the Needham Education Foundation.
