Beth Israel Construction Deadline, Cost on Target

Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center and Surgical Pavilion construction is on target to finish by Labor Day.

The project broke ground in April. John Fogarty, Beth Israel president and CEO, said the construction should be weather tight by December.

The cost of the project is also on target. The estimated cost of the cancer center and surgical pavilion is $24M, which is being financed by a combination of community-raised capital campaign funds and investments by Beth Israel Deaconess Needham and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

“The cost is where it was expected to be by this point,” Fogarty said.

According to Fogarty, the construction has not had a negative impact on staff, patients or traffic in town. Originally at the location was an administration and offices. The offices were moved around the corner. The cafeteria was also relocated. However, the construction has been invisible to patients inside the building.

“This is a great turning point for the hospital,” Fogarty said. “We are very excited.”

The new facility will be 30,000 square feet. The cancer center will take up 20,000 square feet while the surgical pavilion will be 10,000 square feet. The facility will create 10 to 15 new positions.

The cancer center and surgical pavilion will consolidate Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s west suburban cancer services into one facility. The full service cancer center will offer patients advanced imaging systems, six new infusion bays, a radiation oncology suite and access to clinical trials and novel treatments. The new surgical area will provide the ability for patients to have more advanced surgeries closer to home, such as cancer, colorectal, orthopedic, urology, otolaryngology and general surgery.

“For Needham it’s a definite expansion of service,” Fogarty said.
