5 Things You Need to Know: Dig In, Longwood Opera and More

Five things you need to know about Needham and Wellesley for July 16, 2013.

1. Increasing clouds during the day, possibly leading to a thunderstorm (about a 20 percent chance) in the evening. The National Weather Service says the temperatures will range between 96ºF highs and 68ºF lows. They have also issued a Heat Advisory from 11 a.m. EDT until 7 p.m.

2. Drop in for "dino digs" at the Needham Library. Starting at 10:30 a.m., the craft program is open to the first 50 visitors, so swing by early for your projects and the coloring sheet.

3. Ever wonder how the college that shares the town's name came to be? There is one local expert, who happens to be around: Wellesley College historian Jane Callahan will visit Waterstone at 2:30 p.m. Wellesley College was founded in 1870 by Henry and Pauline Durant, and she will take you from then to now. Call 781-235-1614 to RSVP.

4. Catch your favorite broadway tunes here in town, as the Longwood Opera Summer Concert Series kicks off its summer season at Christ Episcopal Church. Tonight's show is Broadway tunes, Tickets: Single admission at the door $8; seniors, student & children $6 Season passs $50; seniors, students & children $35. More info at www.longwoodopera.org
