Caryl Rivers and Rosalind Barnett on How Gender Myths are Hurting Our Relationships, Our Children, and Our Jobs  

Needham, MA – Parent Talk, a nonprofit, volunteer organization in Boston’s Metrowest area that supports families with young children, hosts a lecture for parents and educators with Caryl Rivers, a professor of journalism at Boston University and nationally known author and columnist, and Rosalind Barnett, a senior scientist at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis University on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 7:30pm in the Newman Elementary School Auditorium (Registration and Dessert Reception begin at 7 pm). 

Girls and boys are so different—their learning styles, brain development, and cognitive and spatial abilities—that they need to be parented and educated in completely different ways.  Right?  Maybe not!  In fact, many pervasive generalizations about the “natural” differences between the sexes are unfounded—and these old, unproven stereotypes ultimately are harmful to both girls and boys. 

Join us for an eye-opening presentation by Caryl Rivers, a professor of journalism at Boston University and nationally known author and columnist, and Rosalind Barnett, a senior scientist at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis University.  Co-authors of Same Difference: How Gender Myths are Hurting Our Relationships, Our Children, and Our Jobs and a new book, The Truth About Girls and Boys: Challenging Toxic Stereotypes About Our Children, these experts debunk widespread myths about sex differences and propose instead a less limiting approach that emphasizes each child’s individuality.
