On Thursday, June 7, during the district-wide Early Release Day, the NHS Athletic Department will be running the second annual Eighth Grade Athlete Step-Up Day at the high school from 11:30 a.m. to 2:35 p.m.
The objective of the afternoon is to introduce rising ninth graders to NHS and the interscholastic athletics program. This event will also begin the important transition for the incoming students to the high school community. Parent or guardian permission is required in order for a child to participate.
All registered eighth graders will walk with chaperones to Needham High School after their early release, have a pizza lunch, meet with NHS coaches and athletes, get a tour of the building and attend a Positive Coaching Alliance student-athlete leadership workshop. In this dynamic, interactive workshop, the students will learn about the levels of hard work, commitment and personal growth required to become a true competitor. Ideas and strategies about how to make themselves, their teammates, their teams, and their sports better will be also be discussed.
During the coming year, various PCA workshops will be offered to NHS students, parents, coaches, and to Needham youth sports organizations, at no charge thanks to a generous grant from the Needham Education Foundation.
To sign up a student for Eighth Grade Step-Up Day, visit the Athletic Dept. website, access the permission slip and medical form and return to your child's "A" block teacher by May 31. If your student currently attends private school, forms can be sent directly to the NHS Athletic Department.
