1. Friends of the Needham Public Library Book Sale

• Where: Needham Free Public Library, 1139 Highland Ave., Needham
• When: Saturday, Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 30 from 1-4 p.m.
• Why go: Shop from a variety of paperback and hardcover books for all ages, as well as CDs and DVDs.
• Cost: Most books cost 50 cents to $1.
• Benefits: Needham Free Public Library

2. “A Chair To Remember” Silent and Live Auction Event

• Where: Needham Town Hall, 1471 Highland Ave., Needham (Powers Hall)
• When: Saturday, Sept. 29 from 6-9 p.m.
• Why go: After months of seeing brightly painted Adirondack chairs around Needham, residents can now bid on the chairs for a chance to bring one home. Whether you’re a sports fan, a diehard Needhamite, a dog lover, a movie buff or otherwise, there are plenty of options—with more than 40 uniquely decorated chairs. The silent auction will run from 6-7:30 p.m., with a live auction to begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets include entrance to the auctions, refreshments and live music.

3. Homegrown Coffeehouse 2012-13 Season Opener

• Where: First Parish in Needham, Unitarian Universalist, 23 Dedham Ave., Needham
• When: Saturday, Sept. 29 from 8-10:30 p.m.
• Why go: The Homegrown Coffeehouse’s 2012-13 season opener will feature musician Chris Pahud backed by the Homegrown Band and with special guest Ken Batts. After a decade of opening for top nationally touring folk acts, Pahud has really come into his own as a performer of Americana and roots music, mixed with original material. His latest album, "Red Sky in the Morning", has gotten a lot of play and great reviews on Boston-area folk radio. 4. Fashionably Pink Brunch and Shopping Day

• Where: Divine Kitchens Showroom, Linden Square Courtyard, 180 Linden St., Wellesley
• When: Sunday, Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon
• Why go: Enjoy a champagne brunch and a fashion show featuring the hottest fall trends from CERI Boutique,  French Lessons Boutique, Kenzie Kids/K Girl, National Jean Company and Sara Campbell, while supporting the Ellie Fund, a Needham-based nonprofit that works to fight breast cancer. Can’t make it to the brunch? Get an all-day shopping pass for $10 and receive 10 percent off participating stores on Sept. 30—with 15 percent of sales being donated to the Ellie Fund.

5. Needham Farmers Market

• Where: First Parish in Needham, Unitarian Universalist, 23 Dedham Ave., Needham
• When: Sunday, Sept. 30 from 1-5 p.m.
• Why go: Check out the latest harvest from area farms and gardeners and catch up with your neighbors at the weekly Needham Farmers Market. Apple cider is expected to arrive on Sept. 29, and there will also be corn, tomatoes, mums and more. This week’s featured artisans will be Susan Goldman and Emily Abbott, and Plugged In musicians will perform bluegrass music. Green Needham will be featured at the nonprofit table.
