Super Cuts Eyes Spot in Needham Gateway Plaza
Storefront has been vacant since Verizon left in November.
A Super Cuts could be going in to a storefront in the Needham Gateway plaza that has been vacant since November.
The space, located in the plaza at the corner of Highland and Second avenues alongside Panera Bread, JoS A. Bank and Omaha Steaks, has been empty since the Verizon store left last fall, and property owner Mike Moskowitz has been actively marketing it ever since, he told the Planning Board on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
Moskowitz appeared before the board to ask whether they would consider amending the site plan to allow the prospective new tenant to use only the door on the parking lot side for public access, instead of using the Highland Avenue side entrance as well.
Though Moskowitz said he understood the town's initial idea was to create a pedestrian-friendly "streetscaped" area along Highland Avenue, he noted that in reality most customers for Needham Gateway stores use the doors off the parking lot.
Planning Board members did not seem opposed to the idea but told the owner he would need to file an amendment to the plans, which could take about a month.
F.W. Webb Company is also moving into the plaza, with plans to open a bath showroom at the site this spring, Moskowitz said.
Also at their Feb. 21 meeting, the Planning Board considered a request from the Board of Selectmen to join them in sponsoring an article at the annual Town Meeting that would change town bylaws to allow for banner signs to be placed across streets in town.
Planning Board members said that they did not have any initial problem with the proposal but felt the issue was more under the purview of selectmen, as they are responsible for the public ways, and that the Planning Board should not co-sponsor the article.
