It was last Friday afternoon that Needham lost Selectman Chair Jerry Wasserman, his memorial service took place over the weekend.
At last night's meeting, Selectman Daniel Matthews noted that Wasserman had played a role in most of the major town decisions for many years.
“If his contributions weren’t countless,” Selectman Dan Matthews said, “they would be hard to count.”
He joined the Board in 1999, and was a member of Needham Town Meeting and School Committee before that, Town Manager Kate Fitzpatrick writes in an email. He has also served on a number of other committees around town.
Beyond his town duties, Wasserman played with a folk band, Jerry and the Great Experiment, and had recorded a live album last July. Music was a passion of his.
He died aged 65 at home on Feb. 28, he had been battling cancer.
On the original stories, several readers responded with their thoughts and some photos of Wasserman's life and work in town. We invite you to join their chorus, and dug through Patch's archive to find some of his contributions already recorded. Flip through the gallery above, or add your own.
Patch user Dick Reilly, Finance Committee Chair commented:
Jerry was a caring and committed citizen of Needham. We have all benefitted from his years of service to the Town. Those of us who had the opportunity to work with him over those years were better because he made us better. Thanks, Jerry. You will be missed.
Reader Gail Fischer also posted portraits of Wasserman in various roles: as politician, musician, family man and husband.
Do you have a memory of running into Wasserman at a town event, or speaking to him during a meeting? Do you have a photo of him from somewhere around town? Post comments and upload your photos to this memorial.

Jerry will surely be missed because he was a good man. We may not have agreed on the "politics at play" in our town but I never doubted his desire "to do what was right". We may not have agreed on all the issues but Jerry could always be counted on to listen. I will miss Jerry Wasserman; the sparkle in his eyes when he spoke of his family, the laughter in his voice when he spoke of himself, the pride when he reflected on his accomplishments, and the generosity of spirit that he gave to the world. To live...to love...to laugh. Jerry did all three to the fullest and is why his legacy will live on.
