Services for Retired Needham Fire Chief Today
Visiting hours for Charles M. Bellomo will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at Eaton Funeral Home.
Retired Needham Fire Chief Charles M. Bellomo will be remembered today and tomorrow during services at Eaton Funeral Home and St. Joseph Church in Needham.
Bellomo served the Needham Fire Department for 39 years and was fire chief from 1980 until his retirement in 1987. He died on Aug. 20 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He was 87.
Needham Fire Inspector Skip Hopkins worked with Bellomo when he was the deputy fire chief and recalled that Bellomo “did an efficient job.”
Bellomo served at a busy time for the department, helping to handle the Harvey’s Hardware blaze in 1977 and the Kingsbury Block fire in 1980, Hopkins said.
Traditionally, members of area fire departments turn out to honor their fellow firefighters at funeral services, which can bring a lot of traffic to the area around the funeral home and church.
Deputy Fire Chief Donald Anastasi said the department was still putting together a plan for attending Bellomo’s services but that they would likely have a fire engine participating in the wake on Wednesday morning.
Anastasi said he did not know of any special police details for the services.
Visiting hours for Bellomo will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Church at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Needham, according to the obituary published at eatonfuneralhomes.com.
