Updated: Route 128 Shut Down Near Needham

Massachusetts State Police are closing off southbound and northbound lanes near Needham to allow MedFlight to land after two people were seriously injured in a crash.

Both the northbound and southbound sides of Route 128 are being shut down this evening to allow a MedFlight helicopter to land on the highway after a multi-vehicle crash resulted in serious injuries for one of the drivers.

The crash occurred around 4:12 p.m. on Route 128/I-95 South near exit 19A (Highland Avenue in Needham.

“[State troopers] are awaiting the arrival of a medical helicopter, at which time all southbound and northbound lanes will be closed,” according to an advisory issued by the Massachusetts State Police around 4:55 p.m.

A male driver of one of the vehicles involved in the crash was transported by MedFlight to Mass. General Hospital Boston.

Massachusetts State Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Several Needham Police units and Needham Fire Department were on the scene to assist the state police.
