Rockets Review: Wrestling in Woburn, Girls Basketball, Boys Hockey
A quick look at Needham High School sports action over the past week. Mandatory anti-bullying meeting today 2:40 p.m.

This past week saw NHS Wrestling drop a close one to Bay State League Rival and state powerhouse Framingham, 41-30 on Thursday, and then travel to the Woburn Invitational on Saturday where one Rocket took home Gold.
At Framingham, the visiting Rockets took six of the fourteen bouts, earning four pins along the way:
- Sophomores Dan Goldstein and Will Burke had first period pins, while Senior Captains Islam Baiev and John Cronin both had second period falls.
- Senior Captains Mark Carroll and Mikhail Khibkin had dominating victories, if somewhat frustrating outcomes.
"Those guys (their opponents) weren't wrestling," said Associate Head Coach Nick Gamble. "That was their game plan-they knew they couldn't beat those guys and they just stalled by the edge of the mat to save pin points..."
Despite the strategy, Carroll rolled to a major decision, 13-1, and Khibkin downed his Framingham Captain opponent, 9-4.
The loss brought NHS wrestling to 2-2 in the BSL and 6-4 overall.
The 20-team Woburn Invitational provided the Rockets with exposure to some of the top ranked wrestlers in the State and New England. And for the second week in a row, Needham Standout Mark Carroll walked away with the title after downing a highly touted rival.
After pinning his way to the championship match, Carroll faced a returning state medalist from Agawam. After almost two periods of fast-paced action, Carroll broke his Western Mass. competitor, taking an 11-3 lead and eventually earning the pin.
The victory was Carroll's 135th of his career, and his ninth individual title.
Not placing but also getting their hand raised at Woburn were Sophomore Alex Goff and Senior Chris Ptak who each won a match. While Zach Goldman, Islam Baiev and Ben Glickman added two wins to their season tally.
The upcoming schedule finds the Rockets heading to Norwood on Wednesday for another BSL showdown, then to the Weymouth Invitational on Saturday where they look to repeat as champions.

Gymnastics Stays Unbeaten!
On Friday night, the NHS Gymnastics Team moved to 3-0 on the season and in the league, with a 133.6-132.1 win over BSC Carey rival Braintree. The girls will next travel to take on a very talented Newton North team on Friday, Jan. 18th for a 5:00pm match.
Girls Basketball Cruises Past Weymouth!
Earlier in the week, Girls Basketball cruised past BSC Carey opponent Weymouth to earn their 4th win of the season. The competition ramped up on Friday for the girls, as they welcomed in State #1 Braintree, and although playing the Wamps tough, the Rockets were not able to come away with the upset.
Indoor Track Teams Beat Flyers!
On Thursday, the Needham Indoor Track Teams were in action at the Reggie Lewis Track Center, with both the Boys and Girls earning wins over Framingham. With the wins, the Boys move to 3-0 on the season while the Girls move to 2-1. More on the Wrestling Tournament
On Saturday, at the 20-team Woburn Wrestling Tournament, Senior Captain Mark Carroll, for the second week in a row, walked away with a title after downing a highly touted rival. After pinning his way to the championship match, Carroll faced a returning state medalist from Agawam. After almost two periods of fast-paced action, Carroll turned the tide on his Western Mass. competitor, taking an 11-3 lead and eventually earning the pin. The victory was Carroll's 135th of his career, and his ninth individual title. Not placing but also getting their hand raised at Woburn were Sophomore Alex Goff and Senior Chris Ptak who each won a match.
