Police Reports: Officer Dispatches Injured Deer

The following information was supplied by the Needham Police Department. Any charges mentioned do not indicate a conviction.

A Needham police officer responded on Saturday, May 19 to the report of a deer that had been struck by a car and was lying injured in the roadway.

The responding officer located the animal near 380 Dedham Avenue. As Mass. Highway personnel had not yet arrived and the animal appeared to be suffering, the officer “dispatched the animal in a prompt and humane manner” using a departmental shotgun, following safety procedures to ensure there were no vehicles or people in the area that could be endangered, according to reports.

The dead animal was then placed on the shoulder of the road out of public view and later removed.
