North Hill Employees Go Green

Retirement community staff helped reduce dining room waste over the past few months.

A group of staff members at the North Hill Needham retirement community have been going green over the past few months.

Starting on Earth Day in April, a team of 10 "Green Ambassadors" at agreed to use a reusable lunch box or plate, reusable Nalgene bottle and silverware in lieu of Styrofoam and plastic in the Skyway Café at North Hill. Thanks to their commitment, over the past 15 weeks, North Hill reduced its daily lunch waste by approximately:

  • 750 styrofoam containers
  • 2,250 plastic utensils
  • And 750 bottles/cans

Now more team members are joining the effort, pledging to use reusable materials. Anyone who makes the pledge gets a free water bottle and lunch container from North Hill.

"We'll be keeping an eye on how much waste is reduced over the coming months," explained Rebekah Seaman, Life Enrichment Coordinator at North Hill Needham. "It's just one part of a larger ongoing initiative at North Hill to promote green or sustainable actions."

North Hill residents also have a group that shares "green" tips monthly.
