NHS Linux Club Donates Computers to Needham Housing Authority

The club recently wrapped its first year.

After a successful first year, the Needham High School Linux Club delivered its first batch of computers to residents of the Needham Housing Authority. Penny Kirk, Residents Service Coordinator, will distribute them to families who have requested them.

The club has worked throughout the year learning to build computers and using Linux Operating Systems. The founder, club president and computer technician, John Williams, says he was inspired to start the club after visiting a non-profit organization that refurbishes computers for kids in Raleigh, N.C.

Williams decided to start up a club at NHS with similar goals but a greater emphasis on enjoying learning and tinkering with Linux Operating Systems. Support for the club was immediate from NHS Principal Dr. Pizzi, Assistant Principal Dr. Hogan and club faculty advisor Mr. Davidi.

Club members, John Williams, Steve Man, Jason Hurvitz, Ted Morin, Geoffrey Rogers, Jamie Fitzgerald, Joseph Beutel, and Michaela Gold spent many hours swapping out computer parts, trying out different Linux programs and testing equipment. The club wants to thank NHS faculty, the Needham Recycling Center, Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, and Elm Street Publications for their support and many donations that made possible the learning and eventual gifts back to the community in the form of useful machines.

The club continues to accept donations. If you or your business would like to donate flat screen monitors or computers (must be able to run a minimum of Windows XP) email nhslinux@gmail.com
