Market Gets Green Light
The Planning Board on Feb. 7 voted 5-0 in favor of a special permit for the first Needham Farmers Market.
Needham’s first farmers market got the green light Tuesday evening as the Planning Board unanimously approved a special permit allowing the market to open on Sundays from June through October.
Set to launch on June 10, the market will be located on the front lawn of First Parish Church, 23 Dedham Ave., open 1-5 p.m. each Sunday through the summer. The special permit allows a total of eight vendor booths, with at least half of them selling food. Organizers also hope to bring in local artists and artisans as well as musicians to create a community event.
“We’re very thankful to the Planning Board through the whole zoning process and now through the special permitting. They were very receptive,” said Jeff Friedman, president of Needham Farmers Market Inc., the nonprofit group running the venture. “They had a job to do, and we understand that. They had questions and we answered them. We’re very pleased with the Planning Board and, of course, we’re pleased with the vote.”
Market organizers still have much work to do before the grand opening, securing vendors and raising money to cover the costs of running a market, Friedman said.
