It’s Thursday, and the weekend is right around the corner. Patch has your back with a few fun things to do. Check our picks for the activities to hit and some places to explore. Here's what's happening in and around your town.

  • Why go: The Needham Business Association’s annual Harvest Fair and Souperbowl will feature great tastes from local restaurants, information and offerings from Needham businesses and organizations and fun for the whole family. Sign up for Girl Scouts, taste a bowl of great local chili, get a preview of the Needham Community Council’s upcoming coat and Halloween costume sale and more.

  • Where/when: , 1139 Highland Ave.; Saturday, Oct. 1, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 2, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
  • Why go: Shop from thousands of used books while supporting a great cause—the Friends of the Needham Public Library helps with library programs and purchases. Shop from a variety of genres including fiction, non-fiction, youth, cookbooks, travel, sports, crafts, self-help and audio-visual materials.
  • Pricing: On Saturday, mass-market paperbacks will cost 50 cents each, and hardcover and trade paperbacks will be $1, with a special half-price sale section offered both days. Sunday is Bargain Day—all items are half price, or fill a brown bag for $8.

  • Where/when: , 800 Highland Ave.; Saturday, Oct. 1, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
  • Why go: Visit Carter Memorial Church’s 2011 Pumpkin Patch to pick out a pumpkin or gourd and the kids can participate in a craft or other activity—this week, they’ll be decorating their own pumpkin-head cookies.
  • Pricing: The activity is free. Pumpkins start at 50 cents; all proceeds support the church’s various missions.

  • Where/when: , 23 Dedham Ave.; Saturday, Oct. 1, 8:00 p.m.
  • Why go: Enjoy the opening act for the Homegrown Coffeehouse’s 29th season in Needham—a pair with “a musical rapport and wide embrace of styles from Delta heartache to Chicago drive.” All proceeds benefit the church.
  • Pricing: $18 per person; $15 for students and seniors

  • Where/when: , 1147 Central Ave.; Sunday, Oct. 2, 10:00 a.m.
  • Why go: Walk, ride or drive your way through Needham history. The do-it-yourself tour of local places of interest is free to all. Pick up a map and guide at the Historical Society, at the Harvest Fair or online at needhamhistory.org. Kids can pick up a Pass Card at any of the five hubs and get a stamp at all five hubs to enter for a prize drawing.
