5 Places To Hear Holiday Music

Experience the sounds of the season at concerts in and around Needham.

 

One of the best parts of the holiday season is the music—and not the daily playing of “Dominick the Italian Christmas Donkey” or hearing your kids sing “Jingle Bells” for the 150th time. We’re talking holiday concerts—church choruses, high school bands, bell choirs, orchestras and more, all making beautiful music this month.

Though some programs have passed, there are still many concerts planned this weekend and in the weeks ahead. Here’s a look at five upcoming events:

1. Seventh Annual Messiah Sing

  • Who: Chancel Choir of Carter Memorial United Methodist Church singing the great choruses of the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah
  • Where: Carter Memorial Church, 800 Highland Ave.
  • When: Sunday, Dec. 11 at 3:00 p.m.
  • Cost: Freewill offering

2. Celtic Christmas Extravaganza

  • Who: Boston String Quartet, full chorus and Celtic vocalist Pan Morigan
  • Where: The Presbyterian Church in Needham, 1458 Great Plain Ave.
  • When: Sunday, Dec. 11 at 3:00 p.m.
  • Cost: $20 general admission, $15 seniors/students

3. Klezmer Conquest: Battle of the Bands

  • Who: Four klezmer bands—Klezjam, the JCC Klezmer Ensemble, Shir Madness and Shpilkes playing everything from Yiddish show tunes to folk tunes to hits from the Borscht Belt
  • Where: Temple Aliyah, 1664 Central Ave.
  • When: Sunday, Dec. 11 at 7:00 p.m.

4. A Christmas Cantata Worship Service

  • Who: The Music ministry of The First Baptist Church in Needham will celebrate Advent with worship in song by presenting “The Promise of a King: A Christmas Proclamation of Hope.”
  • Where: The First Baptist Church in Needham, 858 Great Plain Ave.
  • When: Sunday, Dec. 18 at 10:00 a.m.

5. Community Chorus’ Winter Melody Concert

  • Who: The Community Chorus, a 60-member chorus drawing members from Needham, Brookline, West Roxbury and 14 other communities singing a range of musical selections

  • When: Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 8:00 p.m.
  • Cost: $10 at the door
